What is MCAM?

Melanoma cell adhesion molecule (MCAM), also known as CD146 or cell surface glycoprotein MUC18, is a single-chain membrane glycoprotein, belonging to the immunoglobulin superfamily. MCAM is a cell surface adhesion molecule, which can promote tumor development, development and metastasis. It is considered as a potential tumor biomarker and therapeutic target.

MCAM was originally cloned from the cDNA library of human melanoma cells. The high expression of MCAM in melanoma makes it a tumor marker and makes MCAM attract attention in the field of tumor research. MCAM is closely related to the occurrence, development, metastasis, treatment and prognosis of many kinds of tumors.

The Expression of MCAM

MCAM is expressed in melanoma, prostate cancer, breast cancer, liver cancer, urothelial cancer and gynecological tumors, and is closely related to the occurrence, development, metastasis, treatment and prognosis of these tumors. MCAM is a ubiquitous matrix molecule in vascular wall, which can be highly expressed in vascular wall cells, including vascular endothelial cells, smooth muscle cells and pericytes.

The Function of MCAM

MCAM usually acts as a receptor for the layer-adhesive veneer α4 and is a matrix molecule prevalent in the vessel wall.

As a member of adhesion molecules, the basic function of MCAM is to mediate the interaction between cells and between cells and matrix. Through signal transduction and communication, MCAM contributes to local adhesion and aggregation, cytoskeleton reorganization, maintenance of cell structure and regulation of cell function. In addition to the above characteristics, MCAM is active in many cellular physiological processes, such as development, signal transduction, cell migration, differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells, angiogenesis and immune response.

At present, most studies focus on the involvement of MCAM in tumor angiogenesis and metastasis. MCAM is associated with melanoma, prostate cancer, lung cancer, breast cancer and chorioepithelial carcinoma.
