Target Background

Function
Involved in ordered homologous recombination (HR) events in somatic and meiotic cells. Involved in the suppression of spontaneous HR events in somatic cells. Has an opposite function to the DNA binding cofactor MHF1 which promotes spontaneous HR. Functions in replicative repair independently of MHF1 and in a parallel pathway to the endonuclease MUS81. Acts in the same pathway as the two DNA-binding cofactors MHF1 and MHF2 to restrain class II meiotic crossover (CO), and acts exclusively with MHF1 and MHF2 during meiosis to repair DNA interstrand cross-links (ICLs). This common pathway is in parallel to the pathway that involves the RECQ4A helicase. Seems to be involved in the stabilization of recombination intermediates. Involved in DNA double-strand break (DSB) repair during meiosis. Required for synthesis-dependent strand annealing (SDSA) and to a lesser extent for single-strand annealing (SSA). May process meiotic DSB repair intermediates, possibly D-loops, driving them toward noncrossover (NCO) resolution.
Gene References into Functions
  1. FIGL1 and FANCM represent barriers to crossover formation, one limiting strand invasion, the other disassembling D-loops to promote synthesis-dependent strand annealing, which when lifted, leads to a large increase of crossovers. PMID: 26161528
  2. At-FANCM is not only a safeguard for genome stability in somatic cells but is an important factor in the control of meiotic crossover formation. PMID: 22547783
  3. study identified the highly conserved FANCM helicase, as a major factor limiting meiotic crossover(CO)formation; FANCM is a key factor imposing an upper limit on the number of meiotic COs PMID: 22723424
