Target Background

Function
Core component of nucleosome. Nucleosomes wrap and compact DNA into chromatin, limiting DNA accessibility to the cellular machineries which require DNA as a template. Histones thereby play a central role in transcription regulation, DNA repair, DNA replication and chromosomal stability. DNA accessibility is regulated via a complex set of post-translational modifications of histones, also called histone code, and nucleosome remodeling.
Gene References into Functions
  1. This study not only demonstrates the applications of the versatile histone library, but also reveals many previously unknown functions of histone H2A and H2B. PMID: 29038170
  2. Data indicate that histone H2B ubiquitylation (H2Bub) and Asf1 cooperatively promote transcriptional silencing at telomeres and mating loci. PMID: 28520954
  3. A Nap1 dimer provides an acidic binding surface and asymmetrically engages a single H2A-H2B heterodimer. PMID: 27225933
  4. Chd1 takes part in chromatin reorganization surrounding transcribing RNA polymerase II (Pol II) in asymmetric nucleosomes; ubiquitin-conjugated histone H2B stimulates nucleosome sliding by Chd1. PMID: 28032848
  5. decreased CKII function in vivo results in decreased levels of histone H2B lysine 123 monoubiquitylation, a modification dependent on FACT and PAF-C. PMID: 27143358
  6. Nap1 is essential for maintaining proper chromatin composition and modulating the exchange of H2A-H2B in vivo. PMID: 26884462
  7. A role for the H2B nucleosome acidic patch in recruitment of histone modification machinery and maintenance of transcriptional integrity. PMID: 26241481
  8. FACT, a heterodimer of Spt16 and Pob3, disrupts nucleosome structure by binding H2A-H2B with conserved peptide motifs. PMID: 26455391
  9. A histone modification domain (HMD), when expressed as the only source of Rtf1, can promote H3 K4 and K79 methylation and H2B K123 ubiquitylation in yeast. PMID: 22699496
  10. lysine 123 affects transcription in yeast primarily because of it being a site of ubiquitylation in HTB1 PMID: 17447102
  11. A continued accumulation of the histone mRNA HTB1 appears to result from a delay in exit from S-phase in rrp6 deleted cells. PMID: 17855393
  12. analysis of the NMR structure of budding yeast chaperone Chz1 complexed with histones H2A.Z-H2B PMID: 18641662
  13. A yeast strain unable to be ubiquitylated on H2B (K123R) is still proficient for H3 trimethylation at both K4 and K79, indicating that H3 methylation status is not solely dependent on H2B ubiquitylation. PMID: 19255247
