Target Background

Function
Subunit of an amiloride-sensitive cation channel (degenerin channel complex) permeable for sodium, potassium, lithium and N-methylglucamine, and required for mechanosensory transduction (touch sensitivity). Negatively regulates the turning step of male mating behavior.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Ubiquitination of MEC-4 reduces the amount of MEC-4 protein in the processes of ALM neurons and, consequently, the mechanoreceptor current. PMID: 25653375
  2. bz2 mutation encodes substitution A745T, which is situated in the intracellular C-terminal domain of MEC-4. We show that this substitution renders both MEC-4 and MEC-4(d) activity strongly temperature sensitive PMID: 16239217
  3. The d position is part of a key region in the channel functionally and structurally, possibly representing the beginning of a pore-forming domain. PMID: 17261841
  4. MEC-4/MEC-10 DEG/ENaC or its partners MEC-6, MEC-7, and MEC-9 blocked DAF-16::GFP nuclear accumulation induced by hypergravity but did not affect DAF-16 response to other stresses PMID: 17720915
  5. MEC-4 is distributed essentially evenly with MEC-2 around the circumference of touch receptor neurites that serve as gating tethers critical for channel activation by mechano-electrical transduction. PMID: 18094248
