Target Background

Function
Regulates the turnover of the sigma S factor (RpoS) by promoting its proteolysis in exponentially growing cells. Acts by binding and delivering RpoS to the ClpXP protease. RssB is not co-degraded with RpoS, but is released from the complex and can initiate a new cycle of RpoS recognition and degradation. In stationary phase, could also act as an anti-sigma factor and reduce the ability of RpoS to activate gene expression. Is also involved in the regulation of the mRNA polyadenylation pathway during stationary phase, probably by maintaining the association of PcnB with the degradosome.
Gene References into Functions
  1. phosphorylation site not required for regulation of RpoS proteolysis. PMID: 15489452
  2. Our data support the hypothesis that SprE activity is the key level at which ammonia and glucose starvation signals are transmitted to RpoS PMID: 15629914
  3. novel mechanism of regulation of sigma(S) stability through the regulation of RssB activity PMID: 16600914
  4. The rssB mutant displays enhanced resistance to multiple external stresses, possibly indicating that the cell gains its increased vitality through elevated resistance to spontaneous, endogenous stresses. PMID: 18036141
  5. IraM (inhibitor of RssB activity during Magnesium starvation) and IraD (inhibitor of RssB activity after DNA damage) inhibit sigmaS proteolysis both in vivo and in vitro. PMID: 18383615
  6. IraD promotes accumulation of RpoS by binding to the adaptor RssB protein that targets RpoS for degradation. PMID: 19124769
  7. Data propose that SprE plays a multifunctional role in controlling the transcriptome, regulating what is made via its effects on RpoS, and modulating what is degraded via its effects on polyadenylation and turnover of specific mRNAs. PMID: 19767441
