Target Background

Function
Stearoyl-CoA desaturase that utilizes O(2) and electrons from reduced cytochrome b5 to introduce the first double bond into saturated fatty acyl-CoA substrates. Catalyzes the insertion of a cis double bond at the delta-9 position into fatty acyl-CoA substrates including palmitoyl-CoA and stearoyl-CoA. Required for the biosynthesis of membrane phospholipids, cholesterol esters and triglycerides. Regulates fatty acid desaturation, that is, the ratio of unsaturated versus saturated fatty acyl chains, by competing with the acyltransferase STC1 for the common substrate C16:0-CoA. SCT1 sequesters C16:0-CoA into lipids, thereby shielding it from desaturation by OLE1.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Mga2 also activates the transcription of its own mRNA in response to iron deficiency, hypoxia, low temperature and low UFAs. MGA2 up-regulation contributes to increase OLE1 expression in these situations. PMID: 29627385
  2. data suggest that the regulation of OLE1 in the synthesis of unsaturated fatty acids may serve as a positive feedback mechanism to help yeast cells counter the lipid peroxidation and cytoplasmic membrane damage caused by cadmium. The discovery of OLE1 involvement in membrane stability may indicate a novel defense strategy against cadmium stress [ PMID: 27793829
  3. role of OLE pathway in the maintenance of membrane fluidity PMID: 27787227
  4. Ole1 partially relieves the growth defects of endoplasmic reticulum-mitochondria encounter structure -lacking cells. PMID: 27531107
  5. yeast desaturase Ole1p exists as a dimer in vivo PMID: 20406812
