Target Background

Function

Converts retinaldehyde to retinoic acid. Recognizes as substrates free retinal and cellular retinol-binding protein-bound retinal. Can metabolize octanal and decanal, but has only very low activity with benzaldehyde, acetaldehyde and propanal. Displays complete lack of activity with citral.

This study is the first to show that RALDH2 and RALDH3, but not RALDH1, are expressed in the embryonic anterior pituitary gland of the rat. PMID: 17180597
inhibited by compounds that induce congenital diaphragmatic hernias (CDH); data provide an important component of mounting evidence suggesting that the retinoid system warrants consideration in future studies of the etiology of CDH. PMID: 12547725
Results suggest that postnatal expressions of hepatocyte-specific genes might be up-regulated by retinoid receptors, which may be related with the alterations of RALDH expression during postnatal development in the liver. PMID: 14729401
eRolDH and RalDH II and their mRNAs were increased in uteri of rats during estrus. RalDH II was observed in the stromal compartment, particularly in cells close to the uterine lumenal epithelium. PMID: 15205379
