Target Background

Function
Required for bipolar spindle formation and proper chromosome segregation. Has an indirect role in connecting the kinetochores and the plus end of pole to chromosome microtubules by targeting alp14 to the spindle pole body. Involved in the emergence of large microtubule organizing centers (MTOC) in interphase cells. Attaches to the minus ends of microtubules and associates with the sites of microtubule attachment on the nuclear envelope. This leads to the stabilzation of the microtubule bundles.
Gene References into Functions
  1. clustered five amino acid residues within the TACC domain required for spindle pole body localization PMID: 24937146
  2. Csi1p serves as a linking molecule tethering spindle-stabilizing factors such as alp7p to the spindle pole body for promoting bipolar spindle assembly. PMID: 25057016
  3. Mia1p/Alp7p, a transforming acidic coiled-coil (TACC) protein, functions as a length-independent MT crosslinker. PMID: 19879140
  4. When the Crm1p-dependent nuclear export signal of Mia1p is disabled, Mia1p accumulates in the nucleus while its partner protein Alp14p/TOG is restricted to the cytoplasm PMID: 19606211
  5. results indicate that the spatiotemporal regulation of microtubule formation is established by the Alp7/TACC-Alp14/TOG complex through the coordinated interplay of Ran and cyclin-dependent kinase. PMID: 19696784

Subcellular Location
Nucleus. Cytoplasm. Cytoplasm, cytoskeleton, spindle. Chromosome, centromere, kinetochore. Note=Associated with the equatorial MTOC, spindle midzones, spindle pole body and mitotic kinetochore periphery. Spindle and kinetochore localization is alp14-dependent.
