Target Background

Function
Oxidase with broad substrate specificity, oxidizing aromatic azaheterocycles, such as N1-methylnicotinamide and phthalazine, as well as aldehydes, such as benzaldehyde, retinal and pyridoxal. Plays a key role in the metabolism of xenobiotics and drugs containing aromatic azaheterocyclic substituents. Is probably involved in the regulation of reactive oxygen species homeostasis. May be a prominent source of superoxide generation via the one-electron reduction of molecular oxygen. Also may catalyze nitric oxide (NO) production via the reduction of nitrite to NO with NADH or aldehyde as electron donor.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Although mAOX2 and mAOX3 are very similar to each other, we propose the following pairs of overlapping substrate specificities: mAOX2/mAOX4 and mAOX3/mAXO1. PMID: 25287365
  2. AOX3 forms a homodimer and each monomer comprises three major domains involved in binding to the cofactors. PMID: 23019336
  3. The recombinant aldehyde oxidase 3 was expressed and purified in a 30% active form, whereas the native aldehyde oxidase 3 is 100% active. PMID: 21705476
Subcellular Location
Cytoplasm.
Protein Families
Xanthine dehydrogenase family
Tissue Specificity
Highly expressed in liver (at protein level). In liver, the expression is greater in males than females.
