Target Background

Function
Cilium-specific protein required to control the microtubule-based, ciliary axoneme structure. Required for normal sensory cilium function. May act by maintaining the association between IFT subcomplexes A and B.
Gene References into Functions
  1. The authors demonstrate that ARL-3 is a unique small GTPase with unusual high intrinsic GDP release but low intrinsic GTP binding rate. Importantly, ARL-13 acts as a nucleotide exchange factor (GEF) of ARL-3, while UNC-119 can stabilize the GTP binding of ARL-3. We further show that excess inactivated ARL-3 compromises ciliogenesis. PMID: 27102355
  2. The ciliary targeting and restricted localization of NPHP-2, ARL-13, and UNC-119 does not require TZ-, doublet region, and InvC-associated genes in C. elegans. PMID: 25501555
  3. data reveal a novel but conserved role for the SUMOylation modification of ciliary small GTPase ARL13B in specifically regulating the proper ciliary targeting of various sensory receptors PMID: 23128241
  4. Data suggest that two conserved small GTPases, ARL-13 and ARL-3, coordinate to regulate intraflagellar transport and that perturbing this balance results in cilia deformation. PMID: 20530210
  5. arl-13 interacts genetically with other ciliogenic and ciliary transport-associated genes in maintaining cilium structure/morphology and anterograde IFT stability PMID: 20231383

Subcellular Location
Cell projection, cilium membrane; Lipid-anchor. Note=Associates to the cilium membrane via palmitoylation. Localizes to proximal ciliary membranes, to an inversin-like subciliary membrane compartment, excluding the transition zone.
Protein Families
Small GTPase superfamily, Arf family
Tissue Specificity
Specifically expressed in ciliated sensory neurons throughout development in both hermaphrodites.
