Target Background

Function
Repairs oxidative DNA damages, seems also to act as a redox factor. Is multifunctional and may be involved both in DNA repair and in the regulation of transcription. Exhibits apurinic/apyrimidinic (AP) endonuclease activity. Catalyzes the conversion of 3'-phosphor-alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehyde (3'-PUA) to 3'-OH. May be involved in base excision repair in chloroplasts. According to a report, has a significant in vitro 3'-phosphatase activity. According to another report, has no in vitro 3'-phosphatase activity. Has a strong non-specific affinity to DNA.
Gene References into Functions
  1. The major Arabidopsis thaliana apurinic/apyrimidinic endonuclease, ARP, is involved in the plant nucleotide incision repair pathway. PMID: 27836324
  2. ARP is the major AP endonuclease activity in Arabidopsis cells, and is required for base excision repair of both uracil and synthetic AP sites in vitro. PMID: 21781197
  3. plants with knock-out mutations in any one of Ape1L, Ape2, or Arp show no apparent differences from wild type in growth rate, growth habit, and fertility PMID: 19172180
Subcellular Location
Plastid, chloroplast stroma, chloroplast nucleoid.
Protein Families
DNA repair enzymes AP/ExoA family
Tissue Specificity
Expressed in the siliques, flowers, and stems. A high level expression is seen in the leaves. Expressed in both vegetative and reproductive organs.
