Target Background

Function
Required to maintain the structure of the centrosomal microtubule organizing center (MTOC) during mitosis. May have a preferential role in regulating neurogenesis. Required for germ cell mitosis and oocyte differentiation.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Dynein, Mud and Asp operate sequentially during the cell cycle to ensure efficient centrosome-spindle coupling in mitosis, thereby preventing centrosome mis-segregation to maintain centrosome number. PMID: 28864767
  2. Asp at the minus ends of the microtubules cross-links MTs at the pole and within the spindle PMID: 26644514
  3. propose that Asp regulates neuroepithelium morphogenesis through myosin-II-mediated structural and mechanical processes to maintain force balance and tissue cohesiveness PMID: 24142104
  4. asp mutation leads to severe defects in spindle microtubule organization within the germarium. The mitotic spindles of the mutant cystocytes are composed by wavy microtubules and have abnormal poles that often lack gamma-tubulin. PMID: 15242765
Subcellular Location
Cytoplasm. Nucleus. Cytoplasm, cytoskeleton, spindle. Note=During interphase in syncytial embryos distribution is cytoplasmic. On entering mitosis, moves to polar regions of the spindle immediately surrounding the centrosome. At telophase, migrates to microtubules on the spindle side of both daughter nuclei. The nuclear-cytoplasmic distribution could be regulated by the availability of calmodulin.
