Target Background

Function
Ubiquitin-like protein involved in cytoplasm to vacuole transport (Cvt) and autophagy vesicles formation. Conjugation with ATG5 through a ubiquitin-like conjugating system involving also ATG7 as an E1-like activating enzyme and ATG10 as an E2-like conjugating enzyme, is essential for its function. ATG12/ATG5 conjugate has an essential role in plant nutrient recycling.
Gene References into Functions
  1. The ATG12b locus is more important during basal autophagy while the ATG12a locus is more important during induced autophagy. PMID: 20136727
  2. In vitro reconstitution of plant Atg8 and Atg12 conjugation systems essential for autophagy PMID: 18039664

Cytoplasm.
