Target Background

Function
Phospholipid scramblase involved in autophagy by mediating autophagosomal membrane expansion. Cycles between the preautophagosomal structure/phagophore assembly site (PAS) and the cytoplasmic vesicle pool and supplies membrane for the growing autophagosome. Lipid scramblase activity plays a key role in preautophagosomal structure/phagophore assembly by distributing the phospholipids that arrive through ATG2 from the cytoplasmic to the luminal leaflet of the bilayer, thereby driving autophagosomal membrane expansion. In addition to autophagy, also plays a role in necrotic cell death. Plays an essential role in plant nutrient recycling.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Data suggest that PI3K, ATG11 and ATG9 act upstream of ATG2 in Arabidopsis. PMID: 29350244
  2. ATG9 and phosphatidylinositol kinase activity contribute to efficient autophagy in Arabidopsis. PMID: 24805779
  3. results suggest that both AtAtg2 and AtAtg5 proteins are essential for autophagy whereas AtAtg9 protein contributes to, but is not essential for, autophagy in Arabidopsis root tip cells [Atg9] PMID: 17085765
Subcellular Location
Preautophagosomal structure membrane; Multi-pass membrane protein.
Protein Families
ATG9 family
Tissue Specificity
Expressed in roots, leaves, stems and flowers.
