Target Background

Function
Has a dual role in the assembly of mitochondrial ATPase. Acts as a protease that removes the N-terminal 10 residues of mitochondrial ATPase CF(0) subunit 6 (ATP6) at the intermembrane space side. Also involved in the correct assembly of the membrane-embedded ATPase CF(0) particle, probably mediating association of ATP6 with the subunit 9 ring.
Gene References into Functions
  1. The identification of a conserved metallopeptidase present in the intermembrane space, termed Atp23, which exerts dual activities during the biogenesis of the F(1)F(O)-ATP synthase was descibed. PMID: 17135288
  2. A new metalloprotease encoded by the nuclear ATP23 gene of Saccharomyces cerevisiae essential for expression of mitochondrial ATPase (F(1)-F(O) complex) was identified. PMID: 17135290
Subcellular Location
Mitochondrion inner membrane; Peripheral membrane protein; Intermembrane side. Note=Associates loosely with the inner membrane.
Protein Families
Peptidase M76 family
