Target Background

Function
Cadmium transporting P-type ATPase which plays a critical role in cadmium resistance by extruding intracellular cadmium. Capable of high affinity copper ion binding, but not active copper ion transport. May play a role in copper resistance by chelating and sequestering copper ions.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Determined the roles for the molecular factors of ERAD in dislodging Pca1p from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). Inactivation of the 20S proteasome leads to accumulation of ubiquitinated Pca1p in the ER membrane, suggesting a role for the proteasome in extraction of Pca1p from the ER. PMID: 27226596
  2. Data indicate that specific cysteine residues in a degron of cation-transporting P-type ATPase PCA1 (Pca1p) sense cadmium. PMID: 27059957
  3. cadmium resistance is primarily caused by an enhanced function of a metal efflux pump, PCA1. PMID: 21483812
  4. Overexpression or deletion of the functional allele in yeast demonstrates that PCA1 is a cadmium efflux pump PMID: 17107946
  5. Cadmium sensing by cysteine residues within this domain circumvents ubiquitination and degradation of Pca1 PMID: 18753133
  6. Direct cadmium sensing at the endoplasmic reticulum by a degron in Pca1 leads to an escape of Pca1 from endoplasmic reticulum-associated degradation. PMID: 19515821
