Target Background

Function
Methyltransferase involved in the biosynthesis of methylsalicylate in response to stresses. Utilizes salicylic acid (SA) more efficiently than benzoic acid (BA). Can also use anthranilic acid and m-hydroxybenzoic acid as substrate.
Gene References into Functions
  1. A knockout mutant (Atbsmt1) failed to accumulate Methyl salicylate following pathogen infection; these plants also failed to accumulate salicylic acid or its glucoside in the uninoculated leaves and did not develop systemic acquired resistance. [AtBSMT1] PMID: 19958141
  2. Data show that A T-DNA insertion mutation in the AtBSMT1 resulted in reduced methyl salicylate levels upon P. syringae infection. PMID: 19669626
Protein Families
Methyltransferase superfamily, Type-7 methyltransferase family, SABATH subfamily
Tissue Specificity
Expressed in flowers and at lower levels in leaves and stems. Hardly detected in roots and siliques. Expressed in the sepals and the leaf trichomes and hydathodes.
