Target Background

Function
Catalyzes the first reaction in the catabolism of the essential branched chain amino acids leucine, isoleucine, and valine. May also function as a transporter of branched chain alpha-keto acids.
Gene References into Functions
  1. knockout caused increased expression of orexigenic neuropeptides and an avoidance of branched chain amino acid but not high-protein diets PMID: 21969404
  2. Increased blood branched-chain amino acids is sufficient to ameliorate the catabolic effect of LPS on skeletal muscle protein synthesis; this may provide a survival advantage in response to bacterial infection. PMID: 20554928
  3. BCAT2 has a role in branched chain amino acid (BCAA) metabolism modified by GLUT4 glucose-transporter PMID: 20093359
Subcellular Location
Mitochondrion.
Protein Families
Class-IV pyridoxal-phosphate-dependent aminotransferase family
