Target Background

Function
Exhibits F-actin depolymerizing activity and regulates actin cytoskeleton dynamics. Required for cytokinesis in both mitotic and meiotic cells and for aster migration and separation. Promotes cell motility during ovary development and oogenesis. During larval development, required for the cell rearrangement needed for formation of terminal filaments which are stacks of somatic cells that are important for the initiation of ovarioles. Also required for border cell migration during oogenesis. During border cell migration, required for actin turnover and lamellipodial protrusion. Required for the establishment of planar cell polarity (PCP) where cells adopt a uniform orientation within the plane of an epithelium. During establishment of PCP, required for the redistribution of the PCP core proteins fz and stan/fmi to the proximodistal cell boundary. During pupal development, required for elongation of the retinal cell body and for rhabdomere morphogenesis. Required for mushroom body neuroblast proliferation and axon growth. Plays a role in the positive regulation of protein secretion. Plays a role in the regulation of nuclear localization of actin. Required for the maintenance of epithelial integrity by controlling cell junctions and is also necessary for cell survival and tissue growth through regulation of JNK and yki signaling.
Gene References into Functions
  1. study of the structure, backbone dynamics, and biochemical activities of Twinstar; strong affinity for ADP-G-Actin and ATP-G-Actin; mild F-actin depolymerizing activity and stable interaction with F-actin PMID: 29709602
  2. Taken together, our data suggest that Tsr is required for cell survival and tissue growth by regulating JNK and Yki signaling while maintaining the epithelial integrity by controlling cell junctions. This study provides an insight into potential roles of ADF/cofilin in invasive cell migration and tumor suppression in higher animals. PMID: 27041568
  3. Mical and cofilin, therefore, form a redox-dependent synergistic pair that promotes F-actin instability by rapidly dismantling F-actin and generating post-translationally modified actin that has altered assembly properties PMID: 27454820
  4. Cofilin/Twinstar phosphorylation levels increase in response to impaired coenzyme a metabolism. PMID: 22912811
  5. AIP1 enhances cofilin-mediated actin disassembly in the apical region of precluster cells to promote remodeling of adherense junctions. PMID: 22899846
  6. Data show that cofilin is required for F-actin turnover and lamellipodial protrusion in the border cells. PMID: 21205790
  7. tsr is required for planar cell polarity patterning. PMID: 16571634
  8. These results indicate that changes in the extent of cofilin phosphorylation are regulated by Ssh in response to changes in the levels and/or organisation of F-actin. PMID: 17504806
  9. Results show that twinstar (tsr), which encodes Drosophila cofilin/ADF (actin-depolymerizing factor), is required for elongation of the retinal cell body and the morphogenesis of the rhabdomere. PMID: 18423434
