Target Background

Function
Calcium-regulated non-lysosomal thiol-protease which catalyzes limited proteolysis of substrates. Required for assembly and maintenance of integrin attachment complexes which are essential for maintenance of adult muscle. Proteolytic activity is activated in response to increased intracellular Ca(2+) levels during cell degeneration and promotes necrotic cell death.
Gene References into Functions
  1. this study reports crystal structures of Clp1 from Caenorhabditis elegans (ceClp1) in a number of nucleotide- and RNA-bound states along the reaction pathway. PMID: 24813946
  2. our analyses highlight the roles of calcium dysregulation and CLP-1 in muscle myopathies and suggest that the atypical calpains could retain conserved PMID: 22479198
