Target Background

Function
Vacuolar cation/proton exchanger (CAX). Translocates Ca(2+) and other metal ions into vacuoles using the proton gradient formed by H(+)-ATPase and H(+)-pyrophosphatase. Involved in ion homeostasis in association with CAX1.
Gene References into Functions
  1. The role of CAX3 in elemental distribution and abundance in Arabidopsis seed PMID: 22086421
  2. Deletions identified in the N-terminal regulatory region (NRR) of CAX3 activate calcium ion (Ca2+) transport in both yeast and plants. PMID: 21657244
  3. cax3 but not cax1 mutants sensitive to salt, lithium, and low pH PMID: 17968588
Subcellular Location
Vacuole membrane; Multi-pass membrane protein. Note=Tonoplast.
Protein Families
Ca(2+):cation antiporter (CaCA) (TC 2.A.19) family, Cation/proton exchanger (CAX) subfamily
Tissue Specificity
Expressed in roots, stems and flowers.
