Target Background

Function
Heme chaperone required for the biogenesis of c-type cytochromes. Transiently binds heme delivered by CcmC and transfers the heme to apo-cytochromes in a process facilitated by CcmF and CcmH.
Gene References into Functions
  1. CcmE only interacts stably with CcmC when heme is present; thus, specific residues in each protein provide sites of interaction with heme to form this very stable complex PMID: 20599545
  2. role of covalent heme binding to CcmE during the maturation of c-type cytochromes PMID: 15465823
  3. Holo(haem)CcmE binds to CcmC in a stable dead-end complex, indicating high affinity binding of haem to CcmC. PMID: 16824107
  4. In the absence of ATP hydrolysis by mutant CcmA, heme chaperone CcmE is incompetent for heme transfer to an apocytochrome c or for release into the periplasm as a soluble variant. PMID: 17419738
Subcellular Location
Cell inner membrane; Single-pass type II membrane protein; Periplasmic side. Note=Stabilized by CcmD in the membrane.
Protein Families
CcmE/CycJ family
