Target Background

Function
Involved in chlorophyll biosynthesis. Catalyzes the insertion of magnesium ion into protoporphyrin IX to yield Mg-protoporphyrin IX. The reaction takes place in two steps, with an ATP-dependent activation followed by an ATP-dependent chelation step.

  1. N-terminus plus linker domain of rice CHLD (CHLDN + L) mediates protein interactions. CHLDN + L maintains most of the Mg-chelatase activity in vitro. PMID: 29462612

Data suggest that phosphorylation by ChlI2 at a conserved 1-N-histidine residue (H641) in the C-terminal integrin I domain of ChlD stimulates magnesium chelatase activity of the complex, stabilizes the enzyme complex, and thus up-regulates chlorophyll synthesis.
