Target Background

Function
Multifunctional protein involved in chlorophyll synthesis, plastid-to-nucleus retrograde signaling and abscisic acid (ABA) perception. In chlorophyll synthesis, catalyzes the insertion of magnesium ion into protoporphyrin IX to yield Mg-protoporphyrin IX. The reaction takes place in two steps, with an ATP-dependent activation followed by an ATP-dependent chelation step. In addition to its function in the Mg-chelatase enzyme, is required for the plastid-to-nucleus retrograde signaling. The plastid-to-nucleus signal plays an important role in the coordinated expression of both nuclear- and chloroplast-localized genes that encode photosynthesis-related proteins. Has a role in mediating ABA signaling in stomatal guard cells and during seed germination. Binds ABA and is a positive regulator of ABA signaling.

  2. findings provide clear evidence that the Mg-chelatase-catalyzed Mg-ProtoIX production is distinct from ABA signaling, giving information to understand the mechanism by which the two cellular processes differs at the molecular level PMID: 23011401
  3. A missense mutation of CHLH (L690 to F) is responsible for phenotype in which stomatal movements are insensitive to abscisic acid. PMID: 21562844
  4. ABAR spans the chloroplast envelope and that the cytosolic C terminus of ABAR interacts with a group of WRKY transcription factors that function as negative regulators of ABA signaling in seed germination and postgermination growth. PMID: 20543028
  5. Timing of chlorophyll-AB expression protein TOC1 is induced by abscisic acid (ABA)signaling; this induction is gated by the clock and determines the timing of TOC1 binding to the ABA-related gene promoter. PMID: 19816401
  6. Arabidopsis ABAR/CHLH specifically binds ABA (abscisic acid), and mediates ABA signalling as a positive regulator in seed germination, post-germination growth and stomatal movement, showing that ABAR/CHLH is an ABA receptor [ABAR] PMID: 17051210
  7. ABAR/CHLH is an ABA receptor and reveal that the C-terminal half of ABAR/CHLH plays a central role in ABA signaling. PMID: 19535472
