Target Background

Function
Catalyzes the hydrolysis of ester bond in chlorophyll to yield chlorophyllide and phytol. Does not seem to be required for chlorophyll degradation during senescence.
Gene References into Functions
  1. The levels of mRNA of two enzymes involved in chlorophyll catabolism in Arabidopsis, products of two chlorophyllase genes, AtCLH1 and AtCLH2, dramatically increase upon illumination with white light. PMID: 21896889
  2. We propose that AtCLH1 is involved in plant damage control and can modulate the balance between different plant defense pathways. PMID: 15598807
  3. AtCLHs are not required for senescence-related chlorophyll breakdown in vivo and propose that genuine chlorophyllase has not yet been molecularly identified PMID: 17996203
  4. Data conclude that AtCLH2 might be required at the initial stage of leaf senescence, quite likely playing a role in converting Chl b to a. PMID: 18349515
Subcellular Location
Cytoplasm, cytosol.
Protein Families
AB hydrolase superfamily, Lipase family
Tissue Specificity
Expressed in leaves, flowers and flower buds, but not in roots.
