Target Background

Function
Catalyzes the prenylation of para-hydroxybenzoate (PHB) with an all-trans polyprenyl group. Mediates the second step in the final reaction sequence of coenzyme Q (CoQ) biosynthesis, which is the condensation of the polyisoprenoid side chain with PHB, generating the first membrane-bound Q intermediate.

  1. We defined the structure of COQ2 with relevant implications for mutation screening in patients and demonstrated that, contrary to other COQ gene defects such as ADCK3, there is a correlation between COQ2 genotype and patient's phenotype. PMID: 27493029
  2. We engineered the subcellular localization of COQ2 in order to clarify whether there is mitochondrial or ER localization of this ubiquinone biosynthetic enzyme. PMID: 15546356
