Target Background

Function
Mediates both influx and efflux of magnesium ions. Can also mediate cobalt and nickel uptake, albeit only at extracellular concentrations that are toxic to the cell. Does not transport iron. Alternates between open and closed states. Activated by low cytoplasmic Mg(2+) levels. Inactive when cytoplasmic Mg(2+) levels are high.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Overexpression of the Mg(2+) transporter CorA, which is believed to increase cytoplasmic Mg(2+) levels, decreased mgtA transcription in a manner dependent on a functional mgtA 5' leader. PMID: 19897653
  2. does not transport Fe2+ and that the relationship, if any, between iron toxicity and corA is indirect PMID: 15516579
  3. affects lactoperoxidase sensitivity but not other oxidative stress PMID: 16269676
  4. Data show that a corA mutant is attenuated in mice and defective for invasion of and replication within epithelial cells PMID: 18676664
  5. Data show that loss of the CorA protein disrupts a regulatory network(s) with the ultimate phenotype of decreased virulence PMID: 18676666
