This protein is one of the nuclear-coded polypeptide chains of cytochrome c oxidase, the terminal oxidase in mitochondrial electron transport.

The promoter of the COX5b-2 gene has site II-like and initiator elements, together with an upstream G-box that has a negative effect on expression and are involved in the responses of this gene to sucrose and ultraviolet-B (UV-B) light. PMID: 19781003
