Target Background

Function
A terminal oxidase that produces a proton motive force by the vectorial transfer of protons across the inner membrane. It is the component of the aerobic respiratory chain of E.coli that predominates when cells are grown at low aeration. Generates a proton motive force using protons and electrons from opposite sides of the membrane to generate H(2)O, transferring 1 proton/electron.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Cytochrome bd oxidases split the O-O bond in a single four-electron transfer reaction without a peroxide intermediate. PMID: 22287551
  2. E. coli can compensate for the loss of cytochrome bd-I activity and cytochrome bd-II-mediated quinol oxidation prevents the accumulation of NADH PMID: 20392690
  3. The data support models of the catalytic cycle which do not include the fully oxidized form of cytochrome bd quinol oxidase as an intermediate. PMID: 18823983
Subcellular Location
Cell inner membrane; Multi-pass membrane protein.
Protein Families
