Target Background

Function
Cytochrome bo(3) ubiquinol terminal oxidase is the component of the aerobic respiratory chain of E.coli that predominates when cells are grown at high aeration. Has proton pump activity across the membrane in addition to electron transfer, pumping 2 protons/electron.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Removal of three terminal cytochrome oxidase genes (cydAB, cyoABCD, and cbdAB) and a quinol monooxygenase gene (ygiN) from the Escherichia coli K-12 MG1655 genome resulted in the activation of ArcA aerobically. PMID: 20709841
  2. analysis of translocation of the N-tail and C-tail of the Escherichia coli inner membrane protein CyoA PMID: 16481320
  3. Data show that the distinct domains of CyoA have different translocation requirements (YidC only and Sec/YidC) and confirms that the membrane biogenesis of subunit II of cytochrome oxidase in bacteria and mitochondria have conserved features. PMID: 16488430
  4. CyoA is a substrate of a novel pathway that involves both SecYEG and YidC PMID: 16513637
Subcellular Location
Cell inner membrane; Multi-pass membrane protein.
