Target Background

Function
Catalyzes the conversion of O-acetyl-L-homoserine (OAH) into homocysteine in the methionine biosynthesis pathway. Also catalyzes the conversion of O-acetylserine (OAS) into cysteine, the last step in the cysteine biosynthesis pathway. However, it seems that in S.cerevisiae cysteine biosynthesis occurs exclusively through the cystathionine pathway and not via direct incorporation of sulfur into OAS. It therefore has no metabolic role in cysteine biosynthesis and may only have a regulatory role controlling OAS levels.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Western analysis revealed reduced expression of Met17p in the glo1 deletion, but there was no indication of an altered conformation of Met17p or any direct interaction between the two proteins PMID: 27935278
  2. Transgenic tobacco plants expressing the yeast MET25 gene under the control of a constitutive promoter and targeted the yeast protein to the cytosol or to the chloroplasts. PMID: 16193226
