Target Background

Function
Major contributor to triacylglycerol (TAG) synthesis and oil accumulation in seeds. Catalyzes the acylation of the sn-3 hydroxy group of sn-1,2-diacylglycerol using acyl-CoA. Can use palmitoyl-CoA and oleoyl-CoA as substrates. Can use oleoyl-CoA and linoleoyl-CoA as substrates. Has substrate preference for oleoyl-CoA compared to linoleoyl-CoA. Has complementary functions with PDAT1 that are essential for triacylglycerol synthesis and normal development of both seeds and pollen.
Gene References into Functions
  1. DGAT1 expression is regulated by MYB96 in the Arabidopsis seeds. PMID: 29660088
  2. The constructed promoter was ligated upstream of the TAG1 gene encoding diacylglycerol acyltransferase 1 and introduced into Arabidopsis. Seeds from transgenic plants carrying AtTAG1 under the control of the chimeric promoter showed increased oil content (up by 1873%) compared with wild-type seeds. PMID: 29874815
  3. This study identifies the first two regulatory genes, WRI1 and DGAT1, that control the synthesis of all tocochromanol forms in seeds, and shows the existence of a metabolic trade-off between lipid and tocochromanol metabolisms. PMID: 29105089
  4. The results suggest that dedifferentiation is associated with Tag1 activation and that CMT3 rather than DDM1 plays a central role in restraining Tag1 activation via inducing gene body DNA methylation. PMID: 27475038
  5. ABI4 and ABI5 synergistically regulate DGAT1 expression in Arabidopsis seedlings under stress. PMID: 23942253
  6. Triacylglycerol synthesis by PDAT1 in the absence of DGAT1 activity is dependent on re-acylation of LPC by LPCAT2. PMID: 22233193
  7. ABI4 is essential for the activation of DGAT1 in Arabidopsis seedlings during nitrogen deficiency. PMID: 21515696
  8. PDAT1 and DGAT1 have overlapping functions for triacylglycerol synthesis in both seed and pollen, and that the absence of their function leads not only to a reduction in TAG, but also to critical defects in normal pollen and embryo development. PMID: 20040537
