Target Background

Function
Plays an important role in cell protection against oxidative stress and cell death by acting as a oxidative stress sensor. Does not play a role in methylglyoxal detoxification. Plays a role in mitochondrial function together with Pink1. In motor neurons regulates structural synaptic plasticity of locomotor behavior as part of the PTEN-phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase pathway in response to oxygen species (ROS) levels.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Dj-1beta regulates oxidative stress, insulin-like signaling and development in Drosophila melanogaster. PMID: 22983063
  2. the oxidation of conserved cysteine residue to its sulfinate form (Cys-SO(2)(-)) results in considerable thermal stabilization of both Drosophila DJ-1beta and human DJ-1 PMID: 22515803
  3. DJ-1beta protein is biochemically responsive to oxidative stress, and mutant DJ-1 flies are selectively sensitive to environmental toxins associated with Parkinson's disease. PMID: 16139213
  4. Loss-of-function DJ-1beta mutants demonstrated an extended survival of dopaminergic neurons and resistance to paraquat stress, but showed acute sensitivity to hydrogen peroxide treatment. PMID: 16139214
  5. Data show that human DJ-1 rescues flies mutant for DJ-1b; a conserved cysteine in is critical for antioxidant function, and suggest that overoxidation of DJ-1 with age and exposure to oxidants can cause inactivation. PMID: 16894167
