Target Background

Function
Catalyzes the reduction of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) to dimethyl sulfide (DMS). DMSO reductase serves as the terminal reductase under anaerobic conditions, with DMSO being the terminal electron acceptor. Terminal reductase during anaerobic growth on various sulfoxides and N-oxide compounds. Allows E.coli to grow anaerobically on DMSO as respiratory oxidant.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Data suggest that a portion of the hydrophobic region of the DmsA leader peptide determines the specificity of binding and may produce helical properties upon binding to chaperone protein DmsD (twin-arginine leader-binding protein). PMID: 24093457
  2. established an additional role for the cluster in directing molybdenum cofactor assembly during enzyme maturation PMID: 21357619
Subcellular Location
Cell membrane; Peripheral membrane protein; Cytoplasmic side.
Protein Families
Prokaryotic molybdopterin-containing oxidoreductase family
