Target Background

Function

Able to isomerize both 3-cis and 3-trans double bonds into the 2-trans form in a range of enoyl-CoA species. Essential for the beta oxidation of unsaturated fatty acids.

Delta(3),Delta(2)-enoyl CoA isomerase is invloved in degradation of unsaturated fatty acids. Of the three ECI genes in plants, AtECI2 and AtECI3 are tandem duplicats; AtECI1 or AtECI2 were targeted to peroxisomes but AtECI3 remained in the cytosol. [ECI3] PMID: 18657232
