Target Background

Function
Transcription factor involved in sterol uptake and regulation of sterol biosynthesis. Binds to sterol regulatory elements (SRE) with the consensus sequence 5'-TCGTATA-3' present in ERG2 and ERG3 promoters and regulates transcription of ERG2 and ERG3 in response to sterol levels. Seems to be involved in activation of DAN2 and DAN3 cell wall mannoproteins.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Cells lacking both ECM22 and UPC2 display strong mating defects whereas deletion of either gene has no effect. Ecm22 and Upc2 positively regulate basal expression of PRM1 and PRM4. These genes are strongly induced in response to mating pheromone, which is also largely dependent on ECM22 and UPC2. PMID: 28986257
  2. Overexpression of either ECM22 or UPC2 leads to increased filamentation. PMID: 26448198
  3. Upc2p and Ecm22p differ in their contributions to the regulation of their targets PMID: 16055745
  4. Perinuclear localization of Upc2p-GFP and Ecm22p-GFP was increased when ergosterol biosynthesis was blocked by azole drug treatment. PMID: 18675371
