Target Background

Function
Chloroplast-localized elongation factor EF-G involved in protein synthesis in plastids. Catalyzes the GTP-dependent ribosomal translocation step during translation elongation. During this step, the ribosome changes from the pre-translocational (PRE) to the post-translocational (POST) state as the newly formed A-site-bound peptidyl-tRNA and P-site-bound deacylated tRNA move to the P and E sites, respectively. Catalyzes the coordinated movement of the two tRNA molecules, the mRNA and conformational changes in the ribosome. Required for the eoplasts redifferentiation into chloroplasts after germination.
Gene References into Functions
  1. SCO1 encodes a chloroplast-localized elongation factor G. If mutated, the gene affects the chloroplast mRNA translation. [snowy cotyledon 1] [AtSCO1] PMID: 16525888
  2. Seedlings with mutant alleles of SCO1 exhibit cotyledon and hypocotyl albinism due to improper chloroplast development, and normally die shortly after germination making SCO1 essential for plant growth. PMID: 17629920
Subcellular Location
Plastid, chloroplast.
Protein Families
TRAFAC class translation factor GTPase superfamily, Classic translation factor GTPase family, EF-G/EF-2 subfamily
Tissue Specificity
Expressed in cotyledons and at lower levels in adult leaves.
