Target Background

Function
Endonuclease IV plays a role in DNA repair. It cleaves phosphodiester bonds at apurinic or apyrimidinic (AP) sites, generating a 3'-hydroxyl group and a 5'-terminal sugar phosphate. It preferentially attacks modified AP sites created by bleomycin and neocarzinostatin.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Novel Nfo substrates alpha-2'-deoxyadenosine and alpha-thymidine play an important role in counteracting oxidative DNA base damage. PMID: 15568813
  2. analysis of the three-metal-ion catalytic mechanism of the DNA repair enzyme endonuclease IV PMID: 17242363
  3. Biochemical, mutational & crystallographic characterization reveal a 3-metal ion mechanism for damage binding and incision; DNA-free and DNA-substrate complex structures capture substrate stabilization by Arg37 and show a distorted Zn3 ligand arrangement. PMID: 18408731
Protein Families
