Target Background

Function
Controls stomatal patterning. Regulates asymmetric cell division during guard cell differentiation. Mediates stomatal development inhibition. Not cleaved by the protease CRSP (AC Q9LNU1). MEPF1: mobile signal controlling stomatal development in a non-cell-autonomous manner. Uses ERL1 as major receptor. May act by competing with somatogen (AC Q9SV72) for the same receptor, TMM (AC Q9SSD1).
Gene References into Functions
  1. Here, the authors report that EPF1 and its primary receptor ERECTA-LIKE1 (ERL1) target MUTE, a transcription factor specifying the proliferation-to-differentiation switch within the stomatal cell lineages. In turn, MUTE directly induces ERL1. PMID: 28266915
  2. EPF1/EPF2-like proteins form an additional disulfide bond in their loop regions and show greater flexibility in these regions than EPFL9/Stomagen-like peptides. PMID: 23755192
  3. EPF1 and EPF2 are able to activate the MAP kinase MPK6, and that both EPF1 and EPF2 are able to decrease the SPCH level, whereas stomagen is able to increase it. PMID: 23686240
Subcellular Location
Secreted.
Protein Families
Plant cysteine rich small secretory peptide family, Epidermal patterning factor subfamily
Tissue Specificity
Expressed in shoots, but not in roots. Mostly localized in developing leaves, specifically in meristemoids, guard mother cells (GMCs), and young guard cells.
