Target Background

Function
Probable lipid transfer protein (LTP). Seems to control the flowering process and lignin synthesis. Together with DIR1, required for glycerol-3-phosphate- (G3P) and azelaic acid- (AA) induced systemic acquired resistance (SAR). Component of plant systemic immunity involved in priming defenses in a AA-dependent manner, by modulating production and/or translocation of a mobile signal(s) during SAR. Confers resistance to Botrytis cinerea and Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato DC3000 and PmaDG3. May be involved in induced systemic resistance (ISR) mediated by non-pathogenic bacteria (e.g. P. fluorescens GM30). Prevents electrolyte leakage during freezing damage.
Gene References into Functions
  1. used natural variation in Arabidopsis thaliana to study the role of zinc in regulating growth. We identify allelic variation of the systemic immunity gene AZI1 as a key for determining root growth responses to low zinc conditions PMID: 29608565
  2. The function of AZI1 in systemic acquired resistance of Arabidopsis was confirmed by investigation of the phenotypic features of wild-type Col-0, AZI1 T-DNA knockout and AZI1 overexpressing plants after infection with virulent and avirulent Pseudomonas syringae. PMID: 27337039
  3. AZI1 is a partially secreted protein and a likely new member of the group of hydroxyproline-rich glycoproteins. PMID: 26771603
  4. plastid targeting of AZI1 and AZI1 paralogs occurs through a mechanism that may enable/facilitate their roles in signal mobilization PMID: 26203923
  5. AZI1 is involved in defense priming in systemic plant immunity and was down-regulated in leaves by biotic and abiotic stresses. PMID: 23800991
  6. The lipid transfer proteins AZI1 which is required for G3P- and azelaic acid-induced Systemic acquired resistance, is essential for G3P accumulation. PMID: 23602565
  7. AZI1 might be multifunctional and associated with cold tolerance of Arabidopsis. PMID: 21492954
  8. findings show that azelaic acid and AZI1 (At4g12470) are components of plant systemic immunity involved in priming defenses PMID: 19342588
