Target Background

Function
May function as a positive regulator of transcription in developing and differentiated neurons, regulating common aspects of neuronal differentiation and maintenance. Requirement in the CNS may be higher than in the peripheral system. Vital for development of the indirect flight muscles.
Gene References into Functions
  1. we show that Ewg repression of Cyclin E expression is required for the arrest of myoblast proliferation and initiate myoblast fusion and terminal differentiation PMID: 27039019
  2. in the adult intestine, Ebd acts independently of Ewg in physiological Wnt signaling, but cooperates with Ewg to induce the hyperactivation of Wnt target gene expression following Apc1 loss. These findings have relevance for human tumorigenesis, as Jerky (JRK/JH8), the human Ebd homolog, promotes Wnt pathway hyperactivation and is overexpressed in colorectal, breast, and ovarian cancers PMID: 28708826
  3. Knockdown of the Drosophila Nrf1 and Nrf2 ortholog cap 'n' collar isoform-C, but not Hsf1, blocks the protective effect of ASC-JM17 on mutant AR-induced eye degeneration in flies. Our observations indicate that activation of the Nrf1/Nrf2 pathway is a viable option for pharmacological intervention in SBMA and potentially other polyglutamine diseases. PMID: 26962150
  4. Mitochondrial fusion is regulated spatiotemporally by Ewg through Opa1-like during indirect flight muscles differentiation and growth. PMID: 24198395
  5. ewg regulates mutually exclusive R8 rhodopsin expression. PMID: 23850772
  6. The ELAV-binding site of D. virilis is fully functional in regulating alternative splicing of ewg intron 6 in D. melanogaster. PMID: 21705751
  7. Erect Wing facilitates context-dependent Wnt/Wingless signaling by recruiting the cell-specific Armadillo-TCF adaptor Earthbound to chromatin. PMID: 22028028
  8. Differential activity of EWG transcription factor isoforms identifies a subset of differentially regulated genes important for synaptic growth regulation PMID: 20854801
  9. embryonic lethal, abnormal vision CG4262-PA forms a dodecameric complex on 135 nucleotides in the last ewg intron PMID: 16107705

Nucleus. Note=Not in nucleolus.
Protein Families
NRF1/Ewg family
Tissue Specificity
Isoform A is highly expressed in possibly all embryonic neurons and is enriched in adult heads. Other isoforms show similar expression at a much lower level. Transient expression in migrating myoblasts.
