Target Background

Function
Catalyzes the condensation of 2 two farnesyl pyrophosphate moieties to form squalene. It is the first committed enzyme of the sterol biosynthesis pathway. Required for the biosynthesis of ergosterol. May also have a regulatory role regulating the flux of isoprene intermediates through the sterol pathway. Squalene synthase is crucial for balancing the incorporation of farnesyl diphosphate (FPP) into sterol and nonsterol isoprene synthesis. ERG9 is also essential for cell growth in yeast.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Restoration of the complete complementation phenotype was mapped to a 26-amino acid hinge region linking the catalytic and membrane-spanning domains specific to fungal squalene synthases. PMID: 27320012
  2. Data show that engineered strains improved amorpha-4,11-diene by 2~5-fold over the reference strain with squalene synthase ERG9 under its native promoter. PMID: 25889168
Subcellular Location
Endoplasmic reticulum membrane; Multi-pass membrane protein. Microsome.
Protein Families
Phytoene/squalene synthase family
