Target Background

Function
Catalyzes the epimerization of carbon 2' of the side chain of 7,8-dihydroneopterin triphosphate (H2NTP) to form 7,8-dihydromonapterin triphosphate (H2MTP). Is required for tetrahydromonapterin biosynthesis, a major pterin in E.coli.

  1. In E. coli, the folX deletion selectively eliminated tetrahydromonapterin production, which far exceeded folate production. PMID: 19897652
  2. Site-directed mutagenesis study finds glutamate-73 important for substrate binding of dihydroneopterin aldolase (DHNA), but its role in catalysis is minor. Glu-21 and Lys-98 are important for both substrate binding and catalysis. PMID: 17176045
