Target Background

Function
Promotes the biosynthesis of heme as well as the assembly and repair of iron-sulfur clusters by delivering Fe(2+) to proteins involved in these pathways. May play a role in the protection against iron-catalyzed oxidative stress through its ability to catalyze the oxidation of Fe(2+) to Fe(3+). May be able to store large amounts of the metal in the form of a ferrihydrite mineral by oligomerization. Binds to the mitochondrial cysteine desulfurase NIFS1 and increases its activity.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Frataxin deficiency alters the normal functioning of chloroplasts by affecting the levels of Fe, chlorophyll, and the photosynthetic electron transport chain in this organelle. PMID: 26517126
  2. AtFH, apart from its role in protecting bioavailable iron within mitochondria and the biogenesis of Fe-S groups, also plays a role in the biosynthesis of heme groups in plants. PMID: 21166997
  3. These results indicate that frataxin is an essential protein in plants, required for full activity of mitochondrial Fe-S proteins and playing a protective role against oxidative damage. [frataxin] [ATFH] PMID: 17092311
  4. findings suggest a key role of plant frataxin during embryogenesis PMID: 17258206
  5. Frataxin deficiency leads also to nitric oxide (NO) accumulation in both, atfh-1 roots and frataxin null mutant yeast PMID: 19114041
