Target Background

Function
Essential cell division protein. May link together the upstream cell division proteins, which are predominantly cytoplasmic, with the downstream cell division proteins, which are predominantly periplasmic. May control correct divisome assembly.
Gene References into Functions
  1. results suggest that the FtsQ interaction with FtsN, although not strictly essential for the division process, at least in some conditions, plays a role in the proper formation or stability of the division machinery PMID: 23782448
  2. show that the conserved cell division protein FtsQ is required for localization of IcsA and other autotransporters to the pole. PMID: 22375072
  3. Results allow the identification of FtsQ residues involved in the interaction with other partner proteins and the determination of the biological significance of these interactions. PMID: 20460179
  4. FtsQ associates with a large complex of cell division proteins and premature targeting of FtsQ can restore localization of this complex under conditions in which neither FtsQ nor the associated proteins would normally be localized. PMID: 15630023
  5. FtsQ is associated in a hierarchical set of protein complexes and its assembly can occur independently of 'upstream' proteins. PMID: 16824093
  6. Our results indicate that the FtsQ TMS plays a role in FtsQ localization to the division site. PMID: 17693520

Subcellular Location
Cell inner membrane; Single-pass type II membrane protein. Note=Localizes to the division septum. Localization requires FtsZ, FtsA, ZipA and FtsK, but not FtsL, FtsI and FtsN. Insertion into the membrane requires YidC and the Sec translocase.
Protein Families
FtsQ/DivIB family, FtsQ subfamily
