Target Background

Function
Key transcription factor required for motile ciliogenesis. Activates genes essential for motile cilia formation and function. Its activity is sufficient for ectopic development of cilia that resemble motile cilia.
Gene References into Functions
  1. all of these findings provide the first evolutionary perspective into the transcriptional control of motile ciliogenesis and allow us to propose a conserved FoxJ1-regulated mechanism for motile cilia biogenesis back to the origin of the metazoans. PMID: 23144623
  2. activation of a Foxj1 transcriptional network of ciliogenic genes is an evolutionarily conserved response to multiple forms of tissue damage PMID: 20937855
  3. Isolation and expression analysis of foxj1 in zebrafish embryos are reported. PMID: 18956329
  4. Study shows that the cilia that underlie left-right patterning on the Xenopus gastrocoel roof plate (GRP) and zebrafish Kupffer's vesicle are severely shortened or fail to form in Foxj1 morphants. PMID: 19011629
  5. Study shows that Foxj1a activates a constellation of genes essential for motile cilia formation and function, and that its activity is sufficient for ectopic development of cilia that resemble motile cilia. PMID: 19011630
