Target Background

Function
Guanylate cyclase involved in the production of the second messenger cGMP. Involved in the sensing of CO2 levels and acidity by the BAG neurons. May act as a direct receptor for CO2 and H+.
Gene References into Functions
  1. One component of the BAG transduction pathway, the receptor-type guanylate cyclase GCY-9, suffices to confer cellular sensitivity to both molecular CO2 and acid, indicating that it is a bifunctional chemoreceptor. PMID: 24240097
  2. Receptor-type guanylate cyclase is required for carbon dioxide sensation by Caenorhabditis elegans. PMID: 21173231
Subcellular Location
Cell membrane; Single-pass type I membrane protein. Cell projection, cilium.
Protein Families
Adenylyl cyclase class-4/guanylyl cyclase family
Tissue Specificity
Expressed in BAG sensory neurons.
