Target Background

Function

Cytoplasmic poly(A) RNA polymerase that adds successive AMP monomers to the 3'-end of specific RNAs, forming a poly(A) tail. In contrast to the canonical nuclear poly(A) RNA polymerase, it only adds poly(A) to selected cytoplasmic mRNAs. Required for formation of long term memory.

Results indicate that GLD2 is an important regulator of late spermatogenesis and is the first example of a Gld-2 family member that plays a significant role specifically in male gametogenesis. PMID: 21427144
The GLD2 poly(A) polymerase (DmGLD2) is responsible for cytoplasmic polyadenylation that is critical for memory formation. PMID: 18780789

Cytoplasm. Nucleus. Note=Found in neuronal cytoplasm, present in discrete neuronal particles associated with mRNA control, and in nuclear puncta.
