Function

Functions outside the photorespiratory pathway in catalyzing the interconversion of serine and glycine with the conversion of tetrahydrofolate (THF) into 5,10-methylene-THF.

SHM2 is a functional mitochondrial Serine hydroxymethyltransferases. In leaves, the presequence of SHM2 selectively hinders targeting of the enzyme into mesophyll mitochondria. PMID: 21976482
