Target Background

Function
Activates the ARF proteins by exchanging bound GDP for free GTP. Plays a role in vesicular protein sorting. Acts as the major regulator of retrograde Golgi to endoplasmic reticulum trafficking but is also involved in the endocytosis process. Could function redundantly with GNOM. Regulates vesicle trafficking required for the coordinated polar localization of auxin efflux carriers which in turn determines the direction of auxin flow. Mediates the endocytosis of PIN2 from plasma membrane to endosomal compartments. Required for maintenance of endoplasmic reticulum morphology.
Gene References into Functions
  1. These data reveal an unanticipated level of complexity in the biology of GNL1 by showing that its cellular roles are correlated with cell growth. PMID: 23125314
  2. Large ARF-GEFs of the GBF1 class perform a conserved role in endoplasmic reticulum-Golgi trafficking and secretion, which is done by GNL1 and GNOM in Arabidopsis. [GNL1] PMID: 17653190
  3. GNL1 is a BFA-resistant GBF protein that functions with a BFA-sensitive ARF-GEF both at the Golgi and in selective endocytosis, but not in recycling from endosomes. [GNL1] PMID: 17653191
  4. GNL2 encodes a protein homologous to the adenosine diphosphate-ribosylation factor-guanine nucleotide exchange factors, GNOM and GNL1 that are involved in endosomal recycling and endoplasmic reticulum-Golgi vesicular trafficking PMID: 19686373
Subcellular Location
Cytoplasm, cytosol. Golgi apparatus membrane; Peripheral membrane protein; Cytoplasmic side. Note=Soluble and partially membrane-bound.
